Core mechanic

  1. Calculate the Difficulty of the task you are rolling, modified by any appropriate bonuses or penalties (such as Fatigue). The standard Difficulties are as follows:
    Difficulty 1d6 2d6 3d6 4d6 5d6 6d6
    Very Easy 4 50% 90% 99.5%
    100%
    Easy 8 14% 50% 80% 97% 99.75% 99.99%
    Medium 12 3% 20% 50% 80% 95% 99%
    Hard 16 1.5% 7% 25% 50% 75% 90%
    Very Hard 20 negligible 3% 12% 30% 50% 75%
  2. Choose a relevant Skill and a relevant Attribute. If the total of Skill + Attribute is greater than or equal to the Difficulty, you do not need to roll and you do not expend Stamina. You simply accomplish the task with a minimum of effort.
For example, a character with Health 2 and Swimming 2 attempting a Very Easy (4) Difficulty task of swimming in a pool does not normally need to roll or expend Stamina, barring circumstantial penalties.
  3. If the total of Skill + Attribute is less than the Difficulty, roll a number of d6s equal to Skill + Attribute. Total the results.
  4. For any die that rolled a 6, re-roll the die and add the result to the total. Continue re-rolling any additional 6s. A die that rolled a 6 is said to have exploded.
  5. Compare the total to the Difficulty of the task, based on the following table:
Difficulty + 4 ≤ Total Critical success You accomplish the task and gain a Boon.
Difficulty ≤ Total < Difficulty + 4 Success You accomplish the task.
Difficulty - 4 ≤ Total < Difficulty Partial success You may accomplish the task by accepting a Bane. Otherwise, you fail to accomplish the task.
Difficulty - 8 ≤ Total < Difficulty - 4 Failure You fail to accomplish the task.
Total < Difficulty - 8 Critical failure You fail to accomplish the task and suffer a Bane.
